Nature-Culture Fellowship (2026-27)
‘Celebrating Nature-Culture Relationships’ programme at Wildlife Conservation Society-India, Bengaluru in partnership with Canopy Collective, Tezpur is offering a unique fellowship opportunity for the fifth year!   Â
The relationships/ interactions that people share with nature and wildlife around them are unique, fascinating and complex in India. With an increasing number of people having to share space with wildlife, these relationships which have existed for a long time, play a major role in how we interact with nature today.
The Nature-Culture Fellowship calls for early career or recent Bachelor’s/ Master’s degree holders who can commit full-time for the fellowship. Fellows will explore and document interesting and unique human-nature relationships in the northeast region of India. 
The fellowship involves documenting art forms, folklore, culture, traditions, festivals, beliefs, rituals or any relationship that people/ community share with nature/ wildlife around them in a systematic, scientific manner. Location: Tezpur (office and orientation), northeast region of India (field work)  Â
Fellowship Start date:  16th Nov 2026  Â
Fellowship End date: 31st June 2027  Â
Eligibility: Â
1. Early-career or recent Bachelor’s/Master’s degree holders who can commit full-time to the seven-month fellowship and are not currently engaged in any other programme.
2. Willingness to undertake fieldwork in remote locations, potentially with no phone or internet connectivity and in challenging terrain. Candidates should enjoy working in and learning from remote parts of Northeast India and be comfortable being fully immersed in data collection.
3. A research interest in exploring and documenting human–nature relationships through scientific research, literature reviews, and writing popular articles.
4. Comfortable interacting with people, conducting interviews, and spending time independently in the field.Â
5. Working knowledge of English, Hindi, Assamese, Nepali, or other local languages.Â
6. Self-driven, proactive, punctual, and committed to clear and respectful communication along with meeting  project deadlines and fellowship commitments in their peer group.Â
7. A creative approach to communicating stories to a general audience, along with the ability to conduct research and contribute to or publish a scientific paper.
8. This fellowship is open for Indian Nationals only.
Expected output from the fellows would be a report, scientific peer-reviewed publication, popular article/ other creative storytelling output. 
Selection Process:   Â
The selection process for the fellowship involves filling out a Google application form followed by an interview of shortlisted candidates. Please note that you will be contacted only if you are selected for the interview.    Â
We request only candidates who are interested in understanding the fascinating relationships that humans share with nature to fill out the Google application form.  Â
A monthly stipend will be provided for the fellowship.  Â
