Terms of Reference for the Position of Development Officer

Post title: Wildlife Conservation Society Development Officer – South Asia Regional Program

Duration of appointment: 2 Years

Overall Goal of the Position

Assess the private, foundation, corporate and government philanthropic environment in South Asia to source new funds and other resources for WCS’s mission in South Asia and particularly in India. Depending on the assessment, begin implementing necessary actions to bring in new funds or other resources for WCS’s conservation mission in India and South Asia.

Reports

Primary reports are to the South Asia & Bay of Bengal Regional Director and the WCS-India Country Program Director. Secondary reports to the Global Resources Department in WCS-NY.

Period of Hire and Location

Period of hire is two years, following which the position will be assessed for its overall contributions to conservation in India and South Asia. There will be periodic assessments throughout the period of hire, including a formal analysis at the end of year 1. The South Asia & Bay of Bengal Regional Director will perform the assessment of the overall contributions to conservation in South Asia by the Development Officer. A key variable in the assessment will be the amount of funds or other resources the Development Officer is able to bring in over time. Position will be based in Bangalore or Mumbai.

Principal Responsibilities

First Responsibility – Assessments and Evaluations

Assess the private individual philanthropic environment in India with respect to WCS’s mission. Assessment should include potential funds available from large to small donors, and an assessment of the level and kinds of investment needed to access such funds. Analyze and produce report on this within 4 months of hire.

Assess the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) environment in India with respect to WCS’s mission. Assessment should include potential funds available from CSR, and an assessment of the level and kinds of investment needed to access such funds. Assessment should also include other ways WCS’s mission can be better achieved in collaborations with corporations in South Asia, such as pro bono technical support. Produce report on this within 4 months of hire.

Assess the Government of India funding environment in India with respect to WCS’s mission. Assessment should include potential funds available from federal and state governments and an assessment of the level and kinds of investment needed to access such funds. Produce report on this within 4 months of hire.

Second Responsibility – Fundraising

Based upon the results of the assessments (and if the assessments do indicate it is feasible), begin efforts with the most promising leads to raise funds or other resources that will contribute to WCS’s mission in India. It is expected that the Development Officer will often not lead the interactions with the prospective donors. Instead it is the responsibility of the Development Officer to identify potential donors, determine what is the best way to approach them, including what fundraising materials are needed and when, and which WCS staff person is best suited to be the front person for the interactions with the prospective donors.

As a part of this fundraising effort it is anticipated that the Development Officer will develop a database of potential donors, will reach out to past donors and re-establish links.

Expected Qualifications

  • Proven track record in fund raising.
  • Dynamic personality and excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to interact and engage with a wide variety of people.
  • Meticulous, organized, excellent database management and writing skills.
  • Interest in and familiarity with wildlife conservation issues in India and globally.

Salary range: USD $1,000-$2,500 per month depending on  experience and qualifications.
