Workshop Dates: November 3-10, 2016
Location: National Centre for Biological Sciences (Bangalore) and WCS Field Station (Western Ghats)
Ecosystem services are the benefits that people receive from nature. These include climate regulation, water purification, and crop pollination, among many others. Incorporating these values into decision-making is gaining traction globally, and is emerging as a strong research foci in the fields of ecology and conservation science.
In this intensive week-long workshop, offered under the 21st Century Knowledge Initiative (http://www.usief.org.in/Colorado_State_University.html ), participants will receive training in the ecological and human dimensions of ecosystem services. Using case studies from India, the USA, and other regions of the world, discussion topics will include links between biodiversity and ecosystem processes, the effect of land use change on carbon and water, economic valuation, policy applications, and ethics. The workshop will consist of a 4-day classroom component at NCBS in Bangalore followed by a 3-day field trip to the Western Ghats.
The short course is open to graduate students, research scientists, conservation practitioners, and other professionals with a minimum of a Master’s degree in a related field or five years of equivalent professional experience. The course is offered at no cost (with participants meeting the travel, boarding and lodging costs), but space is limited to 20 participants.
To apply, please send 1) your resume or CV, and 2) a 300-500 word cover letter describing why you are interested in this course and the experience and perspectives you will bring to the group.
